GOTD – Kirby Super Star

Kirby Super Star – Action (SNES)
HAL, Inc.

Kirby started out as a traditional platformer, without much interesting about it – sure, it was cute and funny, and occasionally innovative, but it wasn’t so great… until the extra abilities were added.

In this game, as in Kirby’s Adventure, you can eat some enemies to gain their abilities – in this game, 10-15 different types – and use them on your opponent.

Kirby Super Star, however, is interesting in that there are actually several games – 8 in total, three of which are not especially Kirby-ish – which you unlock as you go. These range from the Great Cave Offensive, where you are looking to maximize your wealth by finding treasures hidden within a cave, to the Revenge of Meta-Knight, a more traditional (if darker-themed) Kirby adventure.

Throughout all of these main games, you may be assisted by a partner (controlled by the 2nd player or a computer), created by sacrificing your current ability. These partners have as many variations as there are abilities, so you can create whichever one you (or your friend) wants at any given time.

Although the game is not especially long, the varied gameplay and settings will keep you (and possibly a friend) occupied for a while.

In case you can’t tell, I like cooperative games. This is yet another game that’s great alone, but better with a friend. You will also encounter some situations that will make you laugh – like perhaps the mock RPG battle boss.
